I’ve just been spending the last few weeks in hell. Food hell. I’ve been following the Keto Diet, and for anyone who hasn’t heard of this particular torture, it involves cutting out all sugar, all carbohydrates, and all joy.
It’s actually a really clean way of eating, with fresh vegetables, meat, fish and cheese all on the good list, but I never realised just how much I would miss brown food. No bread, potatoes, rice or pasta, and no sauces that contain sugar, which is ALL of them.
My husband couldn’t understand why I was complaining at having bacon and eggs for breakfast every day, but when that’s pretty much all you can eat, trust me, it soon gets boring, especially without the sausages, toast and ketchup!
Anyway, the good news is it’s nearly over and I will be celebrating by having an evening of pure food indulgence at my local pub.
What? Pub food? I hear you ask. Well, not just your regular pub food, because George, the manager and chef now hosts a fine dining evening every couple of months that rivals the very best Michelin starred restaurants. I’ve already been to two of these evenings, and I can’t wait for the third.
For each event there’s a completely different menu, the last having had a Scottish theme for Burns Night. This time in honour of St Georges Day, the 6-course menu gives a nod to traditional British fayre, with such delights as a black pudding scotch egg, with pickled baby vegetables and apple puree. Or how about the Beef Wellington with asparagus, Jersey royals, spinach and watercress. And to end…there’s a choice of a treacle tart with clotted cream ice cream or poached rhubarb trifle. I’m drooling with anticipation.
I’m equally as excited about the wine, as at an optional extra there is a wine flight to really take your experience to the next level. Actually, if you know me, then you will know I’m probably more excited about the wine than the food, particularly as not a drop of the good stuff has passed my lips in the last six weeks.
Anyway, I couldn’t have timed the end of my diet better, could I? I imagine I shall put all the weight that I lost back on in one evening, but hey, it turns out I’m not really the type of person who enjoys eating nuts and berries, unless of course they are on the side of my dessert and accompanied by a good wine.
