Craft Addict

Each year, during the summer season I find myself visiting every local craft fayre that I possibly can to get inspiration and try new crafts.

I absolutely love crafting to the point of obsession, and I can usually turn my hand to most things.  Put a needle and thread in front of me and I’ll spend hours embroidering.  Give me a glue gun and paper and I’ll make you a greetings card.  Give me a new sewing machine and you are now my best friend.

My name’s Sherry and I’m a craftaholic.

I’m not good at all crafts though.  One that really hates me is pottery.  I became totally hooked on ‘The Great Pottery Throwdown’ a while back, and because my hubby is very lovely, he booked us in to do a pottery class together.

I guess he had visions of us recreating the film ‘Ghost’, and to be fair, he turned out to be pretty good at it.  My attempt however, looked more like I’d been smoking pot rather than artfully making one on a pottery wheel.

Since then, I’ve avoided clay and immersed myself in things that I’m a bit better at, but having visited a local craft fayre recently I decided it was time for a new challenge.

I wandered around all the exhibits alone, as I couldn’t coerce any of my friends to come with me this time.  I wasn’t offended, as I knew they were probably just wary that I’d enrol us in a corn husk doll making class while we were there.  (It has been known – sorry Elaine).

This year I was sorely tempted to try bow carving after watching a group of men dressed like Robin Hood demonstrating the craft, but the lure of needle felting in the next tent was too strong.  I left the merry men, and my next hour was spent jabbing wool, and more often than not, my fingers, with a very sharp needle, in order to make a flower which would then be sewn onto a needle felted hat.  Oh, the joy!

I came away with a complete needle felting kit, a pattern for hat making and a plan to make hats for all my friends for Christmas.

Since then, I have made one hat and it isn’t too bad, other than the blood stains. I just have to decide which lucky person gets it for Christmas.
